Latest Travel Advice

With all the excitement of booking a holiday and packing your case it’s sometimes easy to forget to do some important tasks before you go away, so here’s a list of things to remember before you jet off:

Travel Insurance

  • Make sure you get good travel insurance, the cheapest holiday insurance doesn’t always give you the level of cover you may need
  • Read all the documentation so you know what’s covered
  • Take a copy of your Travel Insurance policy with you on holiday
  • Give a copy of your Travel Insurance policy to family or friends in case of an emergency

  • Check that your passport is valid
  • Check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s website for passport entry requirements (for example some countries require you to have six months left on your passport)
  • Make sure you have any visas you may need
  • Take a copy of your passport for emergencies
  • Fill in the emergency contact details in your passport

  • Check with your doctor that you are fit to travel
  • Get any vaccinations required for your destination
  • If you have a pre-existing medical condition make sure that you take enough medication and supplies
  • British nationals can get a free European Health Insurance Card which gives you access to some medical care abroad. This isn’t in replacement of your travel insurance though, as it doesn’t cover lots of treatments and there may be additional costs involved
  • Check if you can drink the local tap water
  • Learn key words and phrases in the local language, especially for any medical conditions you have

  • Visit the FCO’s website
  • Sign up to the FCO’s email alerts to get the latest information about your destination
  • Make a note of the local embassy or consulate, their opening times and contact details
  • Register with LOCATE
  • Make sure that family and friends know your itinerary, have contact details for you whilst away and have a copy of your Holiday Insurance policy
  • Check with your mobile network provider to ensure that your phone works and has coverage at your destination
  • Take enough money and ensure that you have access to emergency funds

  • Research local laws
  • Research local customs, including dress and behaviour
  • Check HM Customs and Revenue Travel website for information on duty-free allowances, banned goods etc.
  • Find out what items you can and can’t take with you and bring home

Driving Abroad?

  • Take your full driving license with you
  • Check your licence is still valid
  • Research local driving laws

  • Research what the weather is usually like at your destination at the time of year you are visiting
  • Remember sunglasses, sun screen, a hat and to keep well hydrated
